Sing jazz with more freedom.
Jazz Voice Lab is for singers who want to grow the skills that come up in singing jazz — ear, time feel, language, and harmony. Across six sessions, you'll explore practical tools from the jazz tradition: blues language, call-and-response, transcription, guide tones, ear training, motivic development, and modal approaches — applied through singing, listening, and low-pressure group exploration.
Many singers take Voice Lab as a complete experience in itself. For those who want to keep going, it's also a natural first step into one of North Star's small-group ensembles.
Why this course
Singing jazz well is its own craft — ear, time feel, language, and a feel for the harmony underneath what you're singing. Voice Lab works on it all, and half the sessions are backed by a live rhythm section, so you're not just singing with piano — you're singing with a working band.
Over six sessions, you'll build:
Repertoire and workshops are challenging but doable, which is the perfect sweet spot. Instructors hear everything and give you great, practical advice on how to level up.
